Pastor Scott was born and raised in St. Paul, MN, the youngest of three children. He received Jesus as his Savior and heard God’s call to ministry at an early age, and attended Northwestern College in St. Paul to pursue that career. While there, he met Julie from Champlin, MN, the prettiest girl he’d ever seen. The two of them dated throughout college, graduating together in 1989 and getting married three weeks later. They moved into Bethel Seminary housing where Scott completed the next phase of his education, graduating with a Masters of Divinity degree in 1994 (and having two children – Elizabeth and Joshua – along the way).

Before he had completed his final few classes, Scott began a search for a pastoral position which eventually led him to Two Harbors where he and Julie have served since November 1, 1993. A third child, Linnea, was born in 1996. Scott and Julie are very proud of their children and love each one very much. And the whole Nelson family loves their church family at First Baptist.

In his down time, Scott enjoys tennis, basketball, juggling, reading, and watching just about any sports. He serves on a number of boards in the community for organizations that help people. He has also greatly enjoyed attending all the concerts, programs and sporting events his children have been a part of. After more than 20 years with the same church, he loves serving the Lord and His people through ministry more today than ever.

Scott & Nancie Deming – Youth Group

Scott and Nancie Deming currently serve as the leaders of Solid Rock Youth Group at First Baptist. Their passion for working with teenagers started over twenty years ago when they first met as employees of the nation’s largest youth ministry publishing company, Group, in Loveland, Colorado. Since that time, they have consistently been involved with ministering to young people; as Sunday School teachers, YoungLife leaders, youth workers, mentors, and most importantly, as parents.

Scott grew up attending a Baptist church in Colorado, and accepted Christ when he was seven years old. As a college student, Scott learned first-hand how easily it is to become distracted by the temptations of an easy life. After a few years of wandering and searching for answers, Scott decided to return to college. God led him away from the ski slopes of Colorado to a small Christian college in Sterling Kansas where he was strengthened in his faith and grew as a Christian. Immediately, following his graduation from Sterling College, Scott moved back to Colorado where he met and married Nancie.

Like her husband, Nancie grew up attending church and came to know Christ as her Savior in the fourth grade. In a similar manner, she learned that having an early faith in God did not necessarily result in smooth path without temptations and struggles. A difficult family situation caused Nancie to spend several of her teenage years feeling very distant from God. By His grace, she learned that God remains faithful even when His people do not. The gift of a godly husband is a continual reminder of His love and care over her.

In their over twenty years of marriage, God has blessed Scott and Nancie with four awesome kids, who are now teenagers themselves. Raising their own children has heightened their awareness of the need to surround our children with prayer and build a love for God’s Word into every young person they know. Being around young people has always been a very natural extension of their lives. Their home is usually filled with not only their own kids, but a multitude of their friends. When they moved to Two Harbors a few years ago, the Demings continued with their habit of opening up their home to young people and God continues to bless their willingness to be available.
